What Happens If I Don’t Pay My Energy Bills?
If you are unable to pay your energy bills, then your suppliers may apply for a court warrant in order for them to enter your home to install a pre-payment meter. They may also use the services of a debt collection agency to get payment from you.
Having a prepayment meter fitted means that your energy supplier can add a set amount that must be paid each week or else you will be cut off. This set amount is usually a weekly amount that will let you pay off your debt with them over a set period. Obviously you will still have to pay for the energy you currently use too. Any payments you make to the meter it is your outstanding debts that are paid off first. So be careful.
Utility Switching
Everyone knows that they should switch regularly, but not enough people do. Simply put, utility switching is when you change energy supplier to get the best deal for you.
There are only two situations in which you can’t switch supplier, these are:
If you have arrears of over 28 days or, if you are on a prepayment meter, you have arrears of over £500. Otherwise, you can switch suppliers at any time.
There are a lot of switching and comparison websites out there (try using one with the Ofgem logo), just make sure that whoever you use, you do a little research before hand to make you are actually getting the best deal. Try calling your current supplier to see if they can anything – they can often put you on a better tariff if you just ask.
